Microsoft’s Notepad goes from a simple text editor to a mini-Word thanks to spell check and autocorrect – but could it lose its charm?

The once-underappreciated Microsoft Notepad app is receiving new upgrades, including spell check and autocorrect features. Initially introduced as a basic version of Microsoft Word, Notepad is gradually evolving to resemble Word with each update.

The latest Notepad update is currently exclusive to Windows 11 Preview Build 26085, accessible through the Windows Insider Program, a community for professionals and Windows enthusiasts to test new Windows features before official release.

As per MSPowerUser, the updated Notepad app (version 11.2402.18.0) is accessible in the Dev and Canary release channels of the Windows Insider Program. Users will reportedly have the option to customize the use of these new features. While Notepad has traditionally been known for its simplicity, offering these new capabilities may divide user preferences.

@PhantomOfEarth shared the Notepad update on X (formerly Twitter), mentioning that Microsoft is currently testing the features before broad implementation. He also provided an insight into the upcoming customization options, such as enabling or disabling autocorrect and spell check functionalities.

Although not displayed in the screenshot, MSPowerUser suggests that additional settings will allow users to further customize their preferences by choosing the file types to which the new features apply. It also indicates that Microsoft is experimenting with new sections and UI animations in the Windows 11 settings menu within this preview build.

Early user feedback on the updated Notepad

The introduction of spell check and autocorrect in Notepad follows the recent addition of Cowriter, an AI writing assistant, in a previous preview build.

Cowriter received mixed responses from users since Notepad is primarily known for its simplicity, and many users may not be keen on additional features. This move by Microsoft to integrate AI into the Windows user experience has sparked some criticism. It appears that Microsoft is listening to user feedback by offering options to enable or disable the new features and fine-tune their application to specific file types. This approach seems prudent, especially when considering changes to beloved apps that users have grown accustomed to over time. Despite retiring WordPad recently, simplicity still holds value, and Notepad continuing to serve its purpose effectively is crucial.
